Kirsty has been working as a counsellor since 2007, and has been a lecturer in counselling at a further education college since 2009. Since 2011 she has been working as a private practitioner in the Thame area, offering both long and short term counselling to a diverse range of clients with many varied issues. She has previously worked in agencies specialising in abuse, in addictions, in counselling young people and for GP surgeries.
Some of the issues she can help with include: Anxiety, relationship problems, attachment issues, stress, depression, anger, sexual issues, abuse, eating disorders, OCD, phobias, trauma (including PTSD), loss, self-esteem, addiction, self-development, insomnia.
Kirsty believes the Person Centred theory of developing a relationship of safety, trust, and non-judgemental understanding enables clients to explore deeper aspects of themselves, to begin to understand their thoughts, emotions, needs and hopes and to develop a greater acceptance of self and empowerment to solve their own problems.
In addition to this, her use of CBT can help clients recognise that the responses and reactions to life events and situations may be distorted by their old negative beliefs about themselves, often leading to a cycle of negative thinking patterns that result in finding fault with themselves. CBT aims to identify these thinking patterns and challenge them, finding alternative ways of thinking about clients’ situations, therefore changing how they feel.
Kirsty also practices Mindfulness. Recent research shows that being Mindful (present centred) can reduce stress and anxiety and increase productivity.
As a lecturing counsellor Kirsty is committed to continually updating her knowledge and learning on relevant ideas and theories.
Kirsty lives in the Thame area with her teenage children, and enjoys long distance walking, and spending time at the sea.
