The Mummy MOT® is a specialist post-natal assessment recommended for all women following delivery – whether 6 weeks after delivery or many years. A postnatal physiotherapy assessment is already part of every new mother’s standard rehabilitation in France, but unfortunately not in the UK.
The Mummy MOT® is a detailed post natal physiotherapy assessment of the abdominal and pelvic area. It will check your posture, breathing, tummy gap and pelvic floor strength. Following the assessment an appropriate safe exercise programme will be prescribed.
During pregnancy and following delivery postural changes, muscle imbalances and altered alignment occur and may persist. Tummy muscle separation, continence issues and complications from c-sections can leave new mum struggling to deal with daily activities such as bending, lifting and squatting. It is important to correct these imbalance to avoid ongoing issues and allow for return activities.
The assessment begins with taking a history and highlighting any ongoing issues. A screening of your posture and core control is then complete at the same time as your stomach muscles are checked for a separation. The final part of the assessment is based on your pelvic floor muscles. This can be complete either through an external or internal examination. If you would like a chaperone present please advise us before your appointment. Once the assessment is complete a functional exercise programme will be provided. If a tummy muscle separation is identified your rehabilitation will be grounded in the work of Diane Lee.
Its important to say that “it’s not about the gap”. Treatment is not based on the size of the gap but how well tension can be created in your connective tissue. Time is spent explaining the treatment approach and discussing how you can support your recovery with nutrition and breathing.
